High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Barmedman Public School values the importance of High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) and ensures that programs and lessons are adjusted to maximise the talents of our students across a range of fields.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Barmedman Public School, High Potential and Gifted Education is embedded in everyday classroom practice. We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every child is supported and challenged to achieve their best. Through differentiated teaching and targeted opportunities, all students are given the opportunity to thrive.
Small Group Learning
At Barmedman Public School, we are committed to meeting the needs of every child. One of the most effective ways we achieve this is through small group instruction.
During literacy and numeracy sessions, there are at least two adults in each classroom to support focused, small group learning. Smaller group sizes allow for personalised teaching, increased student engagement and timely feedback, enabling students to progress at their own pace.
Supportive Classroom Environments
Our classrooms foster a strong sense of belonging and encourage students to take risks, think creatively and collaborate with others. Positive relationships and clear expectations support student wellbeing and engagement.
Formative Assessment
Teachers use ongoing formative assessment to monitor student growth and adapt teaching and learning programs. This ensures learning is responsive and targeted, allowing all students to be supported and extended according to their individual needs.
Higher Projected Gifted Education (HPGE) at Barmedman Public School
At Barmedman Public School, we recognise the importance of nurturing the unique talents and abilities of our Higher Projected Gifted Education (HPGE) students. Our HPGE program offers a diverse range of opportunities designed to challenge and inspire students, helping them to develop not only academic excellence but also critical life skills such as confidence, creativity, leadership, and resilience. Through participation in a wide variety of enriching activities, students are encouraged to explore their passions and reach their full potential in a supportive and stimulating environment.
Kitchen Garden Program
All students participate weekly in our Kitchen Garden program, which develops lifelong skills, promotes sustainable practices and strengthens community connections. Students grow, harvest and prepare fresh produce from our school vegetable patches, learning the value of teamwork, responsibility and sharing.
Small Schools Art Camp
Students in Stage 3 participate in a three-day Small Schools Art Camp, collaborating with peers from neighbouring schools. Guided by expert teachers, they engage in filmmaking, drama, visual arts, and dance, culminating in a performance and exhibition for families.
STEM Opportunities
Students explore STEM pathways through coding and 3D printing. STEM lessons extend beyond the curriculum, promoting creativity, problem-solving, and a passion for innovation from an early age.
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide programs that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
- Barmedman Public School continues to prioritise sporting participation in a multitude of competitions including gala days, knock out competitions and selection through to zone, regional and state carnivals.
